6 Signs Your Fence Needs Repair Before Storm Season

North Carolina storms are hard on fences. Wind, heavy rain, and shifting soil all put stress on posts, panels, and gates — and small problems left alone tend to turn into bigger, more expensive ones. Here's what to check before the next round of storms comes through the Triangle or the Wilmington coast.

1. Leaning or rocking posts

If you can push on a post and feel it move, the concrete footing has likely loosened or cracked. A leaning post is one of the most common reasons a fence fails completely during high wind.

2. Warped, cracked, or missing boards

Wood boards that have pulled away from the rails, split, or gone missing leave gaps that reduce privacy and give pets an easy way out. Isolated board damage is often a quick, affordable repair rather than a full replacement.

3. Gates that stick, sag, or won't latch

A gate is usually the hardest-working part of any fence. Sagging gates are often a hinge or post issue rather than a problem with the gate itself — and a gate that won't latch is a security and pet-safety issue worth fixing quickly.

4. Rust or damage on metal and aluminum fencing

Metal and aluminum hold up well overall, but damaged sections, bent panels, or failing hardware should get looked at before a storm puts more stress on the weak point.

5. Gaps that have opened up over time

Ground shifts. Fences settle. If you're noticing new gaps at the bottom of your fence line that weren't there a year ago, it's worth a quick inspection before they get bigger.

6. Storm damage you've been putting off

A section knocked loose or a post pulled out of the ground after a storm won't fix itself, and it leaves the rest of the fence more exposed to the next one.

Repair vs. replace

Not every damaged fence needs to come down. We inspect posts, panels, and gates first, then give you an honest recommendation — repair when it makes sense, replacement when that's the better value. BW Woodworks repairs wood, vinyl, metal, aluminum, and deck fencing across Garner, Raleigh, Clayton, and Wilmington.
