Fall Fence Maintenance: How to Prepare Your Fence for Winter
October 26, 2026By BW Woodworks
Fall is a great time to take a look at your fence before colder weather arrives. A little maintenance now can help prevent bigger problems during the winter and keep your fence looking great for years to come.
Check for Damage
Walk around your property and look for loose boards, leaning posts, damaged sections, or areas where the fence may have started to rot.
Pay close attention to the bottom of wooden fence boards, where moisture can collect.
Check Your Fence Posts
Fence posts provide the foundation for your entire fence. If you notice posts that are leaning, loose, or moving when you push on them, it's a good idea to address the problem before winter weather makes it worse.
Clean Up Leaves and Debris
Leaves and other debris can collect along the bottom of your fence and trap moisture against the wood.
Keeping the area around your fence clear can improve airflow and help prevent unnecessary moisture damage.
Inspect Your Gates
Make sure your gates open and close properly. Check the hinges, latches, and posts for signs of wear.
A gate that's already sagging or difficult to close may become a bigger problem over time.
Consider Staining or Sealing Your Wood Fence
Fall can also be a good time to consider staining or sealing a wood fence, depending on the condition of the wood and the weather.
A quality stain or sealant can help protect the wood from moisture and everyday exposure.
Don't Wait Until There's a Problem
Small fence problems are often easier and less expensive to address than major repairs.
If your fence is leaning, damaged, or simply showing its age, fall is a good time to have it inspected before winter arrives.
